Animal prints are a huge trend for Spring/Summer 2013, adorning the catwalks at New York Fashion Week. Whether its tiger prints, leopard print, snakeskin or zebra, next season take your wardrobe on a wild safari ride. This isn’t the first fashion season where animal skins have graced the runways, however the volume of prints poses the question – When will they stop trending? I am the least one to complain because I cannot see any prints that I do not gravitate to. Just like an LBD is a must-have, so is clothing, shoes or accessories with a flare of zoology.
For the upcoming season there is anything but a shortage of wild prints, turning the runways into a wild kingdom and is the base for any look this season. Designers aren’t shying away about accenting the print with metals or a pop of colour for extra oomph! In the 1920’s Marian Nixon brought leopard print to the forefront as a fashion statement when she wore a full length lavish leopard print coat on Hollywood Blvd walking a live leopard. The best thing about animal print is that it is versatile and can embellish a vast variety of outfits. In 1947 designers started introducing body synched dresses in animal print. Leopard print was included in outfits to give a rocker edge look in the 70’s.
Nowadays these prints are synonymous with opulence, aristocracy and wealth, it is thought to be the oldest form of clothing going all the way back to the cavemen who wore animal pelts. Fast forward hundreds of years and you still find that it has always remained in style for any outfit or room, and should be a staple in every wardrobe. It is safe to say that animal prints will not go extinct any time soon.
